Self Assembling Fabric
Spring 2020
4.022 Design Technologies Physics Fabricator Project
Explored how different shrink plastic patterns can recreate classic fabric textures and manipulation
Materials used: Polyester Fabric, Shrinky Dink/Shrink Plastic, Super Glue, Heat Gun
First pass: Successfully created pleats, experimented with rotated pattern and created a scrunch texture.
Needed to refine glue and heating technique
Second pass: apply techniques learned above to create an existing fan tessellation pattern (left)
Created "stitches" rather than voluminous folds because I cut the shrink plastic too short.
Fold Method Experimentation: Used fully connected piece of shrink plastic for arch, individual folds made by super glue parts that contract less.
3 Fold and 4 Fold pleats.
Needed to refine thin glue and even glue technique
Final Deliverables: used 4 Fold Pleats from Fold Method Experimentation
